Street artists place gold Harvey Weinstein statue in Hollywood

News of the deal comes just days before the Oscars, and the end of a tumultuous twelve months-hopefully to open a new chapter in Hollywood history.

Two street artists set up a golden statue resembling Weinstein sitting on a couch holding his robe closed within walking distance of the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

"Casting Couch" is a collaborative work between a Los Angeles street artist known as Plastic Jesus and Joshua "Ginger" Monroe, designer of 2016's nude Donald Trump statues placed in major USA cities.

"Harvey Weinstein became an icon in the entertainment industry", Plastic Jesus wrote on Instagram. In speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the likeness, Ginger claimed it was created as "a visual representation of the practices and methods that are used in Hollywood with these big powerful people". His power and influence was nearly without compare.

The aim of the installation was to place the spotlight on the crisis of sexual abuse in the Hollywood entertainment industry and on the disgraced film producer. The Harvey Weinstein statue arrives with with news that The Weinstein Company, which earlier in the week faced bankruptcy, has been bought by a majority-female investment group that also includes the billionaire Ron Burkle.

The work is titled "Casting Couch".

According to the artists, the Weinstein sculpture took nearly two months to be crafted.

The Hollywood mogul has made headlines in recent months following a series of rape and sexual assault allegations made by numerous women. The 65-year-old reportedly sought treatment at a facility in Arizona in the midst of the scandal, but he has profusely denied all allegations regarding his apparent behavior.
