This was to honour the struggle of women from NY fighting for fair working conditions.

International Women's Day is a major global event that will be widely celebrated in some countries and virtually ignored in others.

The first women's day was observed in February 1909 when 15,000 women marched through the streets of NY demanding improved pay, shorter hours and voting rights.

The United Nations selects a theme every year to focus on the day.

On International Women's Day, and throughout this year, as we mark the centenary of the first women in the United Kingdom securing the right to vote, it is a time to look back on the huge progress that has been made in the fight for gender equality, and to celebrate the success of women in our great city.

IWD has been observed since the 1900s although it wasn't always celebrated on March 8.

Over the a year ago, women have risen to the forefront of activism and have demanded more from our government, our employers, and our communities. Thus, the day stands as a mark of protest against indifference to women and though the immediate need may have changed, the values for protest still hold true. We have come a long way with the Sex Discrimination Act and Equal Pay act but there is still a huge gender pay gap.

In 2015, Labour MP Jess Phillips was one of several people to oppose holding a debate on men's issues in parliament, arguing simply: "it seems like every day to me is International Men's Day".
