The blaze started after a massive explosion inside a boiler at a company named Ramedeo chemicals.

Reports inform that the reverberations of the blast were strongly felt in 8-10 kilometre radius and went uptil Palghar.

During the search operation, three unidentified dead bodies were found, said an official.

"We fear there may be more casualties". They were later identified as Pintu Gautam, Janu Agaria, and Aloknath Agaria, all aged 30 and residents of Shiv Nagar in Boisar.

People those who are injured are admitted to a local hospital. Initial reports from the area suggest that while the fire began in one particular building, it soon turned into an inferno and spread to adjoining buildings as well.

The blast took place at 11.15 pm at the Novaphene Specialties private limited in E-107 unit. "We are probing and the guilty will be charged under relevant sections of the IPC and we may recommend the government to cancel the manufacturing licence of the guilty units", Prashant Narnaware, district collector, Palghar said, adding that it needs to be seen whether the security and safety guidelines were followed or not.

The cause of the blast is not yet clear.

The reverberations of the explosion were so intense that many people believed it was an natural disaster and they stepped outside their homes late on Thursday night. Police, fire, revenue and health personnel were at the spot carrying out rescue operations.
