The findings showed that the compound betanin in beetroot extract could eventually help slow the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the brain, a process that is associated with Alzheimer's disease.

"Alzheimer's is a burden that's only going to get worse", Fargo said.

However, modelling by Alzheimer's Research UK and the London School of Economics found that the introduction of just five new treatments is likely to pose "a significant practical and financial challenge to the current health system", given the "sheer number" of people who will have the condition.

By 2025 - just seven years from now - the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's dementia is estimated to reach 7.1 million - an increase of nearly 29 percent from the 5.5 million age 65 and older affected in 2018. And that takes a toll on caregivers, to the tune of $11.4 billion in added health care costs previous year, according to the report.

Alzheimer's disease is among the most expensive illnesses in the U.S. There's no cure, no effective treatment and no easy fix for the skyrocketing financial cost of caring for an aging population. The report finds that at present 5.7 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease and of these 5.5 million are over the age of 65 years. Adults caring for Alzheimer's patients spent 18.4 billion hours in unpaid care to Alzheimer's patients that is worth an estimated $232 billion.

As the number of older Americans grows rapidly, so too will the numbers of new and existing cases of Alzheimer's.

The diagnosis cases are such strong that in every 65 seconds, some in the US gets diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia.

Messi shines again as Barca down Bilbao, Atletico beaten
The loss means Sevilla are increasingly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League through La Liga this season. Messi in 28 appearances out of possible 29 in La Liga has netted 25 league goals for the Catalan giants.

As the population of the US ages, Alzheimer's is becoming a more common cause of death, and it is the only top 10 cause of death that can not be prevented, cured or even slowed.

"Out of the top 10 chronic diseases, we are the only one that doesn't have a cure or a way to slow it down", Cindy Miller, a Dementia Care Specialist, said. By comparison, the number of deaths from heart disease - the leading cause of death in the United States - fell 11 percent.

About one in three caregivers (34 percent) is age 65 or older.

With his support, this bill can affect the lives of so many affected by this debilitating disease.

"Our data suggest that betanin, a compound in beet extract, shows some promise as an inhibitor of certain chemical reactions in the brain that are involved in the progression of Alzheimer's disease", said Dr Li-June Ming, a professor of chemistry at the University of South Florida, in a statement. The study found that the average projected cost of health and long-term care for an individual with Alzheimer's can range from $360,000 - $424,000.

In 2017, the lifetime cost of care for a person living with dementia was $341,840 - with 70 percent of this cost borne by families directly through out-of-pocket costs and the value of unpaid care.
