Microsoft on Thursday announced a big managerial shakeup including the departure of the head of its Windows group as the technology pushes deeper into a future in the cloud.

The shifts will de-emphasize the company's flagship operating software, Windows, and put the spotlight on its Office productivity software, cloud and artificial intelligence technology. It may also be a sign that MS is taking Amazon Web Services, which offers a competing product, very seriously. Myerson is not leaving immediately, but instead he will see out the transition over the coming months.

Outside of Windows and Devices, there are a few other noteworthy org changes revealed today, especially around AI. Myerson mentions his "next chapter outside of Microsoft" in the post, but does describe his plans in detail. The WDG is being disbanded and band leader Terry Myerson is retiring from Microsoft.

One other tidbit of information gleaned from Microsoft's announcement is that the company is establishing an AI and Ethics in Engineering and Research (AETHER) Committee, which will be made up of senior leadership across the company's various core segments. Two early tasks will be to detect whether AI systems have accidentally incorporated biased points of view and to make sure all Microsoft's efforts abide by the EU's new General Data Protection Regulation.

"Over the past several years, Terry and the [Windows and Devices Group] transformed Windows to create a secure, always up-to-date, modern OS", Nadella wrote.
