Just 8% said they had no gender pay gap at all, based on the median measure.

Those who do not report their figures within the expected time frame will face investigation - if taken to court, an unlimited fine can be imposed.

As the gender pay gap data revelations are all coming to a head today, companies and policymakers alike have been trying to track when gap widens between genders - but as a recent study has shown, that gap appears disappointingly early. The overall percentage of females who receive a bonus is "marginally higher" than that for males, the company said.

William Reed has a median gender pay gap of 18.5 per cent. Unilever(UL), Toyota (TM), Mars and BP (BP) say women in specific divisions were paid more than their male colleagues.

For median hourly rates, the budget airline pays women just 28p for every £1 earned by men.

She added that it was an "urgent priority" to get more women progressing through the company. This matches the mean national pay gap pay, and is only 1 per cent better than the median national pay gap. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published and consulted on its initial strategy for enforcement of gender pay gap reporting.

It shows the vast majority of businesses on average pay men more than women, a trend that cuts across all sectors of the economy and affects both public and private employees.

Audio-visual specialists Midwich in Diss, which had a median gap of 28.6%, said its industry was "historically renowned for having a higher male presence", with 60% of its workforce being male and more men holding senior positions.

Horizontal segregation is another common reason for gender pay gaps, and describes the way roles that are male dominated tend to pay more than roles that are female dominated, despite them frequently requiring similar amounts of skill.
