Up until his Durban court appearance, Zuma's legal team had been successful in doing just that with a series of mostly procedural maneuvers. "I am innocent until proven guilty", he added, speaking in Zulu in his home KwaZulu-Natal province. He faces 16 counts of corruption, racketeering, fraud and money laundering. Cyril Ramaphosa, the only candidate nominated in South African Parliament, succeeded Zuma as president.

Ramaphosa has said that, under the agreement, Zuma will have to reimburse the state if he eventually loses the case. Judge Themba Sishi told Mr Zuma to come back to court on 8 June.

At the core is an allegation that Mr Zuma accepted a bribe to help Thales win a multi-million dollar government contract - allegations Mr Zuma denies. Hundreds of supporters also defied instructions from Luthuli House not to wear party regalia and colours to court, preferring to show loyalty to Zuma instead.

Zuma thanked the crowd for supporting him, as they had previously.

Inside the court, former SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng could be seen sitting on a bench near ANC KwaZulu-Natal leader Sihle Zikalala.

His supporters descended on the city to rally for him, while his critics think court action is long overdue. Some held posters stating "100 per cent behind Zuma".

Zuma may also apply for a stay of prosecution, Downer said meaning he does not want the charges to go ahead in a court of law because he claims the proceedings are politically motivated.

BLF has always said that Zuma has been a victim of the pressure for trying to transform the economy and improve the lives of the poor.

To his supporters, it was clear that "they" meant his political enemies.

Zuma is facing 16 charges stemming from the arms deal nearly a decade ago.

Zuma was initially charged in 2007 while his greatest political rival, Thabo Mbeki, was president - charges that almost derailed his ambitions to succeed Mbeki.

South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma has been charged with corruption.

The affair has cast a shadow over South African politics ever since.

The case against Zuma has been a long time coming. The chief prosecutor dropped the charges against him in 2009 after accusing his own officials of political interference.

The ANC leadership last month said members could support ANC figures facing trial, but ordered them not to wear the ANC's green, black and yellow colors.
