Mercedes appeared to be readying to pit Bottas, but changed their minds when Vettel made his pit stop ahead of them on lap 18, with 39 to go, the Ferrari fitting soft tyres. I don't see what happens behind and unfortunately he got hurt. Hamilton had qualified 4th but a grid penalty for gearbox change dropped him down to 9th place. Red Bull had more trouble, with Daniel Ricciardo's vehicle stopping at the side of the track too, which meant that the team had a double retirement.

Moments later, there were heads on hands in the Red Bull garage as Ricciardo's race came to an end.

Vettel was the first of the leaders to pit, diving in for a fresh set of Soft tyres at the end of Lap 18.

A frustrated Vettel finally burst past the defensive Hamilton, on his original tyres, to re-gain the lead on lap 26.

Amid problems with the radio, Mercedes instructed Hamilton to push so that Vettel would come out behind him if Ferrari opted to make a second stop.

Vettel was nearly overtaken by Bottas on the last lap but made a crucial blocking move and won by only 0.6 seconds for his 49th career win. The mechanic was immediately attended to by the medical team and was taken to the hospital, while Kimi stopped in the pit lane ultimately retiring from the race.

Davis Cup: Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer put Spain into semi-finals
David Ferrer will face Kohlschreiber in the decider, with Spain eyeing a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 2012. Germany also won the doubles match on Saturday.

Cigarini fractured the shinbone and fibula on his left leg after being struck during a botched pit-stop, with Ferrari driver Raikkonen given the signal to go before the left rear tyre had been replaced.

The German looked in total control of the race in the opening laps as he led away from pole position, after Bottas passed Raikkonen into the first corner. The Mercedes' tyres were in a better condition in the final ten laps and Bottas quickly shaved four seconds off the Ferrari's lead between lap 49 and lap 54.

"I can't speak for them but I think it's always a combination of things".

"When you're closing up on the vehicle ahead and you get to the braking zones you lose quite a bit of front downforce because you're running in turbulence, that mainly affects the front end and it's a bit easy to lock up the front wheels", he said. Essentially, Vettel would limp his auto home, with two faster-paced Mercedes chasing him down.

Meanwhile, there was also plenty of action behind the field as well, with Pierre Gasly securing his first ever points after finishing in a brilliant fourth place for his Honda-powered Torro Rosso.

Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne gave McLaren, now with Renault engines, a second successive double points finish in seventh and eighth respectively to lift the team to third overall. Marcus Ericsson who started down in 17th place finished 9th for Alfa Romeo Sauber ahead of Force India's Esteban Ocon.
