Dems Question Scott Pruitt Death Threats; Barrasso Rejects Hearing

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt reportedly did not like the EPA's logo because it reminded him of a marijuana leaf. "Scott Pruitt has faced an unprecedented amount of death threats against him", spokesman Jahan Wilcox said in a statement, noting that threat assessments are conducted by the EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, using information provided by Pruitt's personal security detail, EPA's Office of Homeland Security and its inspector general.

Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee said Tuesday they reviewed confidential security assessments describing 16 purported threats.

In a February 14 "Preliminary Intelligence Enterprise Threat Assessment Review" memo from EPA's Office of Homeland Security Intelligence Team, according to the senators" letter, agency officials used all caps and bold print as they concluded that the justification for the coverage outlined by Pruitt's protective security detail in an October 17 memorandum "DOES NOT employ sound analysis or articulate relevant "threat specific' information appropriate to draw any resource or level of threat conclusions regarding the protection posture for the Administrator".

The Democrats also obtained a February 14 assessment from EPA's Office of Homeland Security Intelligence that concluded "EPA Intelligence has not identified any specific, credible, direct threat to the EPA administrator".

The Associated Press reported last week that Pruitt has spent about $3 million on security, a figure confirmed by The New York Times.

Congressional Republicans are largely standing by Pruitt, making it unlikely the measure will succeed in the GOP-controlled Senate. Pruitt's 20-member full-time detail is more than three times the size of his predecessor's part-time security contingent. It's the latest sign that ethics points raised largely by Democrats over Pruitt's spending at EPA may nonetheless unfold all through the aisle.
