On Wednesday, Cynthia Nixon released a video stating that legalizing marijuana is one of her campaign issues as she runs for governor of NY. In 2011, during his first term as Speaker, Boehner wrote that he was against the "legalization of marijuana" and "concerned that legalization will result in increased abuse of all varieties of drugs", NORML reports.

Nixon says 80 percent of the New Yorkers arrested for marijuana are black or Latino, despite the fact that whites and people of color use marijuana at roughly the same rates. Marijuana stocks, many of which are listed in Canada because of USA legal uncertainty, have suffered this year after almost tripling in 2017.

"The simple truth is, for white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time".

Unlike Boehner, Weld has been consistently advocating for medical cannabis since 1992, and supported his home state's legalization of recreational marijuana in 2016.

Cuomo responded defensively, noting that in January he'd announced plans to have the state's health department study the impacts of legalizing cannabis.

While Nixon has spoken out about recreational legalization in NY before, this discussion on how it correlates to the issue of racial inequality is particularly refreshing and needed.

Weld and Boehner also agree that the issue of cannabis legalization is largely a debate over whether or not the 10 Amendment grants states the legal right to legalize a federally-prohibited drug. They issued a joint statement saying, "we both believe the time has come for serious consideration of a shift in federal marijuana policy".

Cuomo has opposed legalizing recreational marijuana in the past, calling it a "gateway drug". He may face a fight in the legislature, but he has meanwhile announced an expansion of the state's medical marijuana program. Nixon tweeted Thursday, linking to a campaign donation page. "The days of making residents jump through hoops are coming to an end", Murphy said in the announcement last month.
