US Vice President Mike Pence will meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the Summit of the Americas in Peru on Saturday, the vice president's Communications Director Jarrod Agen said in a statement.

He told reporters at the Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru, yesterday that the operation "significantly eroded" and "degraded" Syrian chemical weapons capabilities and that the mission was "completely accomplished".

Pence, who was also scheduled to meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, struck a notably confident tone, saying USA officials "think we're close" and were "encouraged at the progress of our negotiations".

"The goal of this meeting is not only to address the issue of NAFTA, but also to talk about the bilateral relationship, which should continue to be based on cooperation and mutual respect", Pena Nieto said.

After the meeting with Pence, Trudeau said the "positive momentum" included the thorny issue of USA demands around automobile production. And with tensions simmering over trade, Pence expressed hope alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the three nations could soon agree to a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement.

'I think President Pena Nieto understands that he and President Trump have a difference of opinion on that, ' he said.

Trudeau also said the NAFTA talks had reached a "positive momentum".
