The comments reflect how foreign automakers have been going out of their way to show their commitment the Chinese market amid simmering trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

"Relationships and working together is more important in China than any place I've ever worked", said Trevor Worthington, Ford Motor Co.'s vice president for Asia-Pacific product development.

Daimler had a preliminary meeting with Geely but has yet to discuss alliances or any other details, said its chairman, Dieter Zetsche.

"We have not even found specific topics to talk about", Zetsche told reporters.
