Google at its recently concluded I/O 2018 annual developer conference announced some new features for its products like Gmail, Assistant, Maps and more.

Artificial intelligence was a key theme at the event, where Google also laid out plans to use AI to help users spend less time on their phone and other devices.

One of the fascinating things that Google showed off during Google I/O was their advancement in AI, where they unveiled a new system called Duplex that could make calls of behalf of the user and speak to human beings and respond naturally.

And unlike the voices of current AI assistants which give off their robot origins, Duplex sounded natural.

The other highlight of Google I/O was Android P, which again has a layer of AI and ML built-into it.

Material Gallery can be accessed through an Android and iOS app, or through the web. And while Google's attempts to introduce new guidelines and tools for developers will help, software is still wedded to a decades-old graphical user interface that feels increasingly unfit for objective.

Several big names in the industry such as Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Essential and Nokia are part of Google's Android Partner Program.

In the demonstration, Duplex's use of language was sufficient to convince the salon operator on the line that she was conversing with a human being.

Google has updated Material Design and released a new tool for developers called Material Theming, which aims to help them customize apps faster. This is all possible due to Google's huge Artificial Intelligence.

Critics have urged the companies to halt the spread of misinformation and extremist propaganda, improve data privacy protections and play a greater role in combating app addiction. These will look at the flow of news information, analyse it and then sort it into storylines. Google representatives told The Verge that the company felt a responsibility to inform individuals who do encounter Duplex that they may be talking to a piece of a software, and that the Assistant team was looking to safeguard the product against misuses like spam calling.

While this new feature is directly locking horns with Apple's and Amazon's counterparts - Siri and Alexa, the respective companies' very own personal assistants, there is plenty of interest and excitement as to how Google will match up to it.
