Trent Alexander-Arnold, moreover, is extremely deserving of a position in the England squad.

England coach Gareth Southgate released his 23-man list that will execute their campaign at the World Cup in Russian Federation next month.

There are major names that have been left out of the squad, including long-time goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The pair were indeed both axed from Southgate's squad although there were a number of surprise inclusions.

Stalwart defender Gary Cahill was left out of the squad for the last set of worldwide friendlies although the ex-Middlesbrough man has reneged on that decision and has opted to include him in the 23.

Liverpool and Chelsea youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were perhaps the most surprising admissions, while Blues defender Gary Cahill and Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck were fortunate to get call-ups following their inconsistent performances in the Premier League.

The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Nick Pope, Fabian Delph and Jack Butland have made the cut despite limited global experience.

Lewis Cook, Jake Livermore, Adam Lallana and fellow Burnley player James Tarkowski join Heaton among those on standby. "When we pick young players, it's not just because they are young, it's because their performances deserve it", said Southgate.

Southgate said the decisions to leave out Hart and Bertrand were "really tough" but the England manager is happy with his main selection and five-man stand-by list.

In defence, as anticipated, there is room for Ashley Young and Danny Rose, while Southampton's Ryan Bertrand has been omitted despite recent call ups.

"I could've had easier conversations by keeping them involved".

"The balance of the squad is good, both in terms of experience, character and the positional balance".

Everton's Jordan Pickford, Stoke City's Jack Butland and Burnley's Nick Pope are the chosen stoppers who will be vying to start in Russian Federation.

We look at how the players reacted to the announcement and what the football media and England fans think of Southgate's 23-man squad.

England will play pre-tournament friendlies against Nigeria and Costa Rica before kicking off their Russian Federation 2018 bid against Tunisia on 18 June.

"You need half of your team to be world class to be favourites in a competition like this and we haven't got that at the moment, but we will have that in four years and six years".
