Former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been charged in NY with rape and several counts of sexual abuse stemming from two separate accusers.

The accusations, first reported past year by the New York Times and the New Yorker, gave rise to the #MeToo movement in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of misconduct.

Weinstein is also under investigation for alleged sex crimes in Los Angeles and London. He is now out on bail, wearing a monitoring device.

In a statement earlier in the day, he New York Police Department said Weinstein was "arrested, processed and charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women".

The former Hollywood producer walked into a NY police precinct office through a gauntlet of reporters and photographers, carrying what appeared to be books.

It relates to a woman who has not been identified or spoken publicly, the official said. Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman declined to comment on the reports. "These charges, we believe that they are constitutionally flawed", he said. "We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence".

A statement from the New York Police Department confirmed the charges and thanked "these fearless survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

According to the Associated Press, more than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing, including actress and activist Rose McGowan, who said Weinstein raped her in 1997, and Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra, who said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992.

Harvey Weinstein will face trial after being charged with rape. "This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually", Manhattan Assistant Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon said in court.

He's accused of confining a woman in a Manhattan hotel room and raping her in 2013, according to a court complaint.

She added that seeing him in handcuffs, despite the fact he could be seen smiling, is "a very good feeling".

The First Police Precinct station house, where Mr. Weinstein was arrested, was not unfamiliar to him.

It was a carefully choreographed performance.

Police have, however, previously confirmed an active Weinstein investigation regarding Evans, who was an aspiring actress at the time.
