It is noted that the producer was charged with two counts of rape. Weinstein, 66, has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.

Ben Brafman, Weinstein's powerful defence attorney, has declined to comment. "We got you. Yeah".

Sex crimes, aside from child pornography cases, are usually handled by local prosecutors under state law, but federal charges can be brought under certain circumstances if a person brings a victim across state lines for the objective of a sexual assault or the attack happens on federal lands.

"Mr. Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood", the attorney said.

Representative Weinstein said his client agreed to wear a tracking device.

McGowan told the AP on Thursday that she is gratified but "still in shock" that Weinstein was expected to surrender.

NBC's Kelly asked: "If he were watching this today, what would you say to him?"

He stepped out of a black SUV, clutching several books - what appeared to be the Rodgers and Hammerstein biography "Something Wonderful", a book on director Elia Kazan and a black Moleskine-type notebook - and looking glum as he walked up the steps into the station.

The American actress Paz de la Huerta, 33, has accused Weinstein of raping her at her apartment in Manhattan in 2010.

Asia Argento, who like McGowan was among the first to share her story with journalists last fall said in a statement to CNN: "After decades of abusing women with impunity, finally, the beginning of the end of Harvey Weinstein's reign of terror".

Goldberg told The Associated Press that "we are relieved and grateful that justice is coming, but we also mourn the cases where it didn't".

Dozens of women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct since 2017 and he is still under investigation for alleged sex crimes in London.

Harvey Weinstein has made his first public appearance since October as he was charged by investigators.

The NY police said shortly after that he was charged for a rape and a sexual assault on two women separate, without giving other details.

More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing.

And it helped, she said, that some of the initial accusers were celebrities who found news outlets eager to provide coverage.

He co-founded Miramax, which has produced such Academy Award-winning films as Pulp Fiction, Chicago, The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love.

Over the years, Weinstein's films received more than 300 Oscar nominations and 81 statuettes. She says Weinstein made unwanted advances toward her on two occasions in 1991, in NY and Los Angeles.

Police set up a sting in which the woman recorded herself confronting Weinstein.

It is the first criminal case to be brought against Weinstein since the revelations about him erupted last October and sparked the #MeToo movement.

About 90 minutes later, Weinstein was led by officers into Manhattan Criminal Court in handcuffs, his head bowed and grimacing, to await an arraignment hearing.

Women around the world will be celebrating this weekend - as they should be. They include TV hosts Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose, comedian Louis C.K, Democratic Sen. Al Franken, chef Mario Batali, casino magnate Steve Wynn and, most recently, Democratic New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
