Anti-transgender Governor Eric Greitens has announced his resignation following allegations from his mistress that he slapped her, blackmailed her and coerced her into sex.

"This ordeal has been created to cause an incredible amount of strain on my family; millions of dollars of mounting legal bills, endless personal attacks created to cause maximum damage to family and friends", he said in a statement from his Jefferson City office. He did not take questions from journalists.

Prior to taking office, Greitens had pledged to root out "corrupt career politicians", but his brief, 17-month tenure was plagued by scandal.

The charge was dropped earlier this month, but a special prosecutor has been considering whether to refile it.

The charge, filed in April following an investigation by the Missouri attorney general's office, accused Greitens of using a donor list from the veterans charity he founded, The Mission Continues, for his 2016 gubernatorial campaign.

Greitens then took a photo of her, she said, before telling her: "You're not going to mention my name". There was concern that the Greitens drama could pollute the state GOP, once again providing McCaskill with a possible lifeboat created by Republicans. He's also a former Missouri sheriff.

"This was not what drove the governor's decision, but it's one part we had to address", said Jim Martin, an attorney for the governor.

Of course, this surgery - not unlike Kyrie Irving's surgery that effectively ended his season - comes as a surprise to most. Ainge joked: "I don't think he wanted to be seen in public and ruin his movie career".

Gardner declined to comment on that second charge, saying that it's in the hands of the special prosecutor. Louis County, said in a statement that "innocent people don't resign and criminals don't get let off the hook simply because they cut and run".

"The time has come though to tend to those who have been wounded and to care for those who need us most", Greitens said.

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, who resigned on Tuesday, had offered to leave office in exchange for dismissal of a felony computer tampering charge against him in a wider scandal, a prosecutor's spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

A complaint also remains pending at the Missouri Ethics Commission alleging Greitens filed a false campaign report previous year about the source of the charity donor list. One of the open stipulations states that Greitens has agreed to release Gardner and everyone in her office from civil liability. "I don't believe the market was treating the state's constitutional crisis surrounding the impeachment process as any sort of a credit risk".

Greitens said it was "a great honor and a privilege" to be governor and he "will always be a fighter for the people of Missouri". But Gardner withdrew the charge when she could not avoid being called as a witness, making her position as prosecutor in the trial untenable. Greitens had hoped to be acquitted, which Roe said would have allowed him to mount a full defense against the potential House impeachment proceedings.

Parson was elected as the state's 47th lieutenant governor in November 2016 and previously served in the state's senate and house of representatives.
