President Donald Trump meets with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the G-7 summit, Friday, June 8, 2018, in Charlevoix, Canada.

Trudeau confirmed he had warned Donald Trump his country would impose retaliatory tariffs on United States goods from July 1, denouncing Trump's decision to invoke national security concerns to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel as "insulting" to the Canadian war veterans who had fought alongside U.S. allies.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron were especially vocal ahead of Trump's arrival.

He added: "Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things...but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

Although Trump said the trade talk was "not contentious", his comments come amid a tense few days with multiple world leaders over Trump's decision to impose steel and aluminum tariffs on the country's biggest trading partners: Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Trump also repeated an earlier proposal that USA trading partners should drop all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies to industries and producers in their own countries.
