The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting USA president.

People watch a TV broadcasting a news report on the upcoming summit between the US and North Korea, in Seoul, South Korea, June 11, 2018.

He was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who posted a picture on Twitter of him shaking hands with Kim and the message: "Welcomed Chairman Kim Jong Un, who has just arrived in Singapore".

He expressed hope that Mr Trump and Mr Kim would be able to make progress.

"I think that very quickly I'll know that something good is going to happen", Trump said in Canada where we met leaders of other G7 economies.

A White House statement said Trump will hold a one-on-one meeting with Kim Tuesday morning, with only translators present, followed by a working lunch and an expanded bilateral meeting that will include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Advisor John Bolton.

He added that Singapore had been following developments on the Korean peninsula for a very long time. "And it's my honour and we will have a terrific relationship I have no doubt".

Moments later, however, the two men went their separate ways, without signing any document, leaving in their wake a crackle of expectation around a summit that mixed Mr. Trump's flair for reality television with the high stakes of nuclear politics. But there are major doubts, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and given that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to his holding onto unchecked power.

Mr Lee also wished Mr Kim success for the summit, and expressed the hope that it would improve prospects for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in the wider region. "It's wonderful, it's fantastic, it's awesome, when I said those things, when I went back home, I got so many death threats, and I believed in North Korea, and I couldn't go home, I couldn't even go home, I had to hide out for 30 days, but I kept my head high, and I knew things were going to change..."

The seemingly warm exchange between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim on Tuesday was particularly striking, coming just days after a public clash between the USA president and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The two leaders exchanged broad smiles and warm thank-yous when they met at the Istana.
