In effect, it lulls the adaptive driver aids into an electronic stupor. The paper reported the company chose not to use the additional sensors.

He said the current version of Autopilot was most focused on safety, while the August update would introduce more autonomy.

United States consumer watchdog group, "The Consumer Group" said Friday that Tesla should fix the flaws in its driver assist system.

Currently, a Tesla in Autopilot mode can perform some self-driving functions such as parking and identification of highway lanes to improve the safety of changing lanes on the road.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Tesla had considered installing additional sensors that would track the driver's eyes to ensure they were looking forward and a different steering sensor that would detect the driver's hands on the wheel.

When Tesla released the original version of Autopilot, some owners appeared to operate their vehicles as if they were fully autonomous. "All you will need to do is get in and tell your vehicle where to go", the site says.

The new Tesla Roadster could come with not one or two but "10 small rocket thrusters" for "top speed" company CEO Elon Musk said via his Twitter account. "There's so much more at stake when you've got two to four tons of metal, glass and plastic hurtling down the road at 70 miles per hour".
