The Broward County Sheriff's department confirmed that the rapper died at the hospital.

Monday night, police were still combing through the rapper's auto as people watched from behind crime scene tape.

Prosecutors reportedly believe the musician - by way of recorded calls he made in jail - attempted to coerce his girlfriend into dropping her case against him.

His real name was Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy.

A representative for the Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed to Complex that the man who was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital was Jahseh Onfroy, a.k.a. XXXTentacion.

The shooting took place in Deerfield Beach, about an hour north of Miami.

In a subsequent post requesting anyone with information on the situation to come forward anonymously, the Broward Sheriff's Office says Onfroy was "approached by two armed suspects", with at least one firing a gun at Onfroy during a possible robbery.

Officials said they will be alerting the victim's next of kin before releasing his identity. His latest album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The rapper, whose grim, often suicidal rhymes propelled him to the top of the USA chart just months ago, was said to have had his second album debuted in March at the top of the Billboard charts.

"Rest in peace I never told you how much you inspired me when you were here thank you for existing", he wrote.

XXXTentacion pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts, including witness tampering, and had been under house arrest for a time while he awaited trial.

The "Look at Me" rapper, who'd recently been freed from house arrest to tour in support of his Billboard-topping sophomore disc ?

XXXTentacion has faced several legal issues and was now awaiting trial on charges that he beat his pregnant girlfriend.

"This got me f-ked up".

After his music was briefly removed from Spotify under its prior controversial "Hate Content and Hateful Content Policy", the rapper spoke out on Twitter.

"God bless his family, friends and fans".
