New York City: Tens of Thousands Protest President Trump's Immigration Policies

Ronald Vitiello is the new acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Trump administration said, as President Donald Trump looks to fine tune his "zero-tolerance" policy on illegal immigration.

Across the nation, ICE has never seemed more visible as anger continues over the separation of families under the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy.

He said the border patrol not ICE is responsible for separating families at the border, noting the two are separate agencies.

This week, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., said he plans to introduce legislation to eliminate the agency.

And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose shocking primary victory against incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley heralded a new progressive push in the Democratic party, has been a vocal advocate of abolishing the agency. "They can't collect and gather information to go after people who are truly problems".

"Even the cops don't like us anymore, because they're listening to the news also", said an agent who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Stephen Yale-Loehr, a professor at Cornell University Law School who has written extensively on immigration law, told USA TODAY earlier this week that ICE isn't going anywhere soon. His "zero tolerance policy" led officials to take more than 2,000 children from their parents as they tried to enter the country illegally, majority fleeing violence, persecution or economic collapse in their home countries.

ICE operates under Nielsen's Department of Homeland Security. "You get rid of ICE, you are going to have a country that you're going to be afraid to walk out of your house".

"The president's deeply immoral actions have made it obvious: We need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our morality and that works", Warren said.

In major cities and tiny towns, thousands of marchers gathered across America, moved by accounts of children separated from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border, in the latest act of mass resistance against President Donald Trump's immigration policies. They're not alone. Some progressives on the Hill worry that wielding the "Abolish ICE" banner would be a political gift to Trump and his allies, and that Democrats should consider a more nuanced approach.

The American President tweets in support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials for doing "a fantastic job of keeping us safe by eradicating the worst criminal elements".

But Trump, who ran on a hard line immigration platform, eased the ICE guidelines in his first week in office, as his Administration declared no groups would be broadly granted exemptions to deportation laws. Cortez was among the more vocal candidates calling for ICE to be shut down. "The radical left Dems want you out".

As a result, children were separated from their families and held first in "processing centers", then in shelters.

The growing anger directed at the agency prompted Trump to call out on Twitter what he described as "shameless attacks on our courageous law enforcement officers".
