Firefighters have gotten a handle on a wildfire that whipped up late Friday night in the hills above Goleta in Santa Barbara County, and CalFire reports the Holiday Fire is holding at 100 acres.

The fire that destroyed about 20 homes in Goleta and caused thousands of evacuations reached 80 percent containment Saturday.

"A chain dragging on a trailer have caused fires and, again, the exhaust (from a vehicle) and, of course, someone smoking and throwing that out", said Burns.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in San Diego County, saying people and property are under "extreme peril" due to the West Fire.

Past year was the worst fire season on record in the state, with thousands of homes lost and dozens killed _ from Northern California wine country south to Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni told KSBY that the fire is burning out of control, with no containment. More information on evacuations can be found here.

The fire about 32 miles north of Craig has destroyed two structures.

A new blaze erupted Friday night in Santa Barbara County northwest of Los Angeles. The fire has grown to cover more than 21,000 acres.

Steep and inaccessible terrain on the north side of the blaze has hampered firefighters, Cal Fire said, and warmer weather this weekend could spell trouble.

Officials said Saturday morning "crews are now working to complete containment, and to mop up and fix areas impacted by fire suppression actions".

The blaze showed "extreme fire behavior with movement in multiple directions" and has spread across the border in OR, according to Saturday morning's report.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, Huerfano County officials said Highway 160 had reopened and residents of Tres Valles could return home.
