Victims are said to be spread out across nearly two to three blocks as witnesses reported hearing anywhere between 10 and 20 shots fired.

The Star reported witnesses as saying a man dressed in black fired up to 20 shots in the area.

A number of people have been shot in Toronto, Canadian media report, quoting police and medics. The shooter was no longer active, paramedics told CBC news.

Jeremy Chohn, a local reporter who is at the scene, has tweeted "victims are spread across many blocks".

"We started to hear people scream out front", Steinhauer said, adding that she had been told four to six people had been shot.

One of the victims is believed to be a child, according to local news outlets but the victims' conditions are unknown.

Streets in the area have been closed while police and other emergency services respond to the incident.

The Toronto Transit Commission said trains are not stopping at Chester as a result of police activity.
