Pompeo remarks came just two days after the Trump administration slapped sanctions on Turkey's justice and interior ministers over Brunson's case.

Brunson, 50, is being tried on espionage and terror-related charges, which he and the USA government vehemently deny.

Brunson is charged with supporting the group Ankara blames for orchestrating an attempted coup in 2016.

Brunson was moved to house arrest last week following almost two years in jail on terror-related charges but the change only increased tensions.

The row over Mr Brunson escalated last week when US Vice President Mike Pence, like the pastor an evangelical Christian, said Turkey would face "significant sanctions" if this "innocent man of faith" was not freed.

The cost of insuring Turkey's debt against default spiked to the highest in more than six years, while the BIST 100 share index tumbled more than 2.5 percent, with banking stocks among the decliners.

The Erdogan government has vowed to retaliate against the USA sanctions, announced Wednesday, but has not revealed what they will be.

The Trump Organization, which the president owns but which is managed by his sons, does not own the Trump Towers, but has a license partnership with Turkish billionaire Aydin Dogan, who developed the site.

After Ankara launched an offensive in January supporting Syrian rebels against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia in its western enclave of Afrin in Syria, the United States called for restraint.

Turkey has been trying to have Gulen extradited from the United States for two years.
