Four minutes later, at 11:01 pm eastern, President Trump declared victory.

O'Connor, a local county official, tried to project a moderate image, saying he would support new Democratic leadership in Congress and work with Republicans but also criticizing the Trump tax cut.

Why? With 100 percent of precincts reporting, and with the early vote counted, Balderson leads O'Connor by 1,754 votes out of 202,521 votes cast.

The 12th district has numerous hallmarks of areas that could be weak spots for Republicans this cycle - well-educated, relatively affluent suburbs that may have soured on Trump and are looking to register their frustration through their midterm vote.

It's rare, but not impossible, for election results to be overturned when absentee votes skew hard in one direction.

Provisional ballots won't be counted until August 17, and the victor of Tuesday's race won't be seated until the House returns to work on September 4.

He's running for a seat that has been held by a Republican since 1983, but his Democratic opponent, Danny O'Connor, is running surprisingly close to him.

O'Connor, 34, however, onstage at his campaign headquarters in the central OH district, said the race was a "tied ballgame", with a rematch due in November's regular congressional election for the seat, which opened up when GOP Rep. "At our core we've always been a party about people - how we empower people against big corporations and against the exploitation we've seen for a long time".

And while Trump claimed credit for the tight victory in a Tuesday night tweet, it's likely Kasich who deserves the game ball for helping Balderson hang on in enough suburban territory to pull out the win.

Speaking in front of a packed stadium, the 44-year-old went after the sportswriters who he blames for everything that took place. They were going to mail it to him Saturday. "Kobe Bryant, thanks for showing me what passion and love for your craft looks like.

In Kansas, Republicans were fighting among themselves in an unusual battle for governor in which the president sided with the incumbent's challenger.

Balderson told supporters in OH: "I'd like to thank President Trump".

Senate Republicans had hoped to make MI, a state which Trump carried, competitive, but it's fallen down the list of top targets for 2018.

"He is a fantastic guy who loves his State and our Country - he will be a GREAT Governor and has my full & total Endorsement!"

Republicans are scrambling to avoid an embarrassing defeat in a seat that the party has held for decades. "That was not good", the president tweeted. Balderson and his Republican allies have backed away from the tax plan in recent weeks, training their fire instead on top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

And in Missouri's 1st District, Democratic Rep. William Lacy Clay faces a challenge from the left from Cori Bush, a nurse and activist who has campaigned with Ocasio-Cortez. Bernie Sanders and NY congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who catapulted to fame when she defeated the No. 4 House Democrat in a June primary.

Conservative election analyst Henry Olsen predicted on Hill.TV's "What America's Thinking" on Monday that impeachment hearings against Trump will happen if Democrats take back the House and Senate in November.

"Josh Hawley has established himself as a conservative champion for Missouri families, and we have no doubt he will beat Claire McCaskill this November", said Chris Hansen, executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
