Pence: Space Force Will Be Independent Service by 2020, Include Elite Operators

President Donald Trump announced the creation of a space force a few months back, but Vice President Mike Pence said today that the White House is planning to launch it by 2020 - a mere two years from now.

Thursday's announcement coincided with a report detailed by the Pentagon on how the newest branch of the U.S. military is set to work.

The idea of a Space Force had been raised previously, but ran into stiff opposition from Pentagon brass.

"We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength", Republican Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama and Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said in a statement following the report's release.

"Now is not the time to rip the Air Force apart".

The US is a member of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, a document which represents the basic legal framework of global space law.

Based on the wording of the email, it doesn't sound like this would be for the official Space Force program - more like Space Force gear the campaign wants to peddle to anyone courageous enough to buy it. Dare we say wear it, too? U.S. Space Command will be responsible for directing the employment of the Space Force.

The Department of Defence plan calls for establishing a Space Development Agency, a Space Operations Force and a Space Command, copying to some extent the existing services and wings of other branches. Many of these items will require changes to US law. Only Congress has the authority to establish a new branch of the military-something that hasn't happened since the U.S. Air Force was founded in 1947.

Anderson said the 11 children found inside the compound at first played at neighbouring properties but stopped in recent months. Police say the youngsters were so starved that they "looked like third world refugees, with basically dirty rags for clothing".

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mattis said he was in support of the creation of a separate combatant command for space, adding that his department was in "complete alignment with the president's concerns about protecting our assets in space".

When president John F. Kennedy delivered a speech in 1962 explaining why America was sending men to the Moon, he famously said, "There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet".

Military leaders have said repeatedly that modern warfare depends on space.

Despite the announcement, there has been some backlash from other politicians and former astronauts about the need for such a "Space Force".

In every domain, America will always seek peace, the vice president said. But there's still a lot unspecified regarding whether non-defense space activities, such as those pursued by the NSA, will be affected by the changes.

He added the "Space Force" was an idea "whose time has come".

Responding to Thursday's outlining of plans for a Space Force, Democrats were withering about Mr Trump's ambitions.
