Only Ohio State (30) has been in the preseason poll for longer.

The AP Top 25 is determined by a simple points system based on how each voter ranks college football's best teams.

The preseason AP poll started in 1950 and since then only Oklahoma from 1985-87 had started No. 1 in three straight years until now.

Alabama, which came in at No. 1 in the preseason Coaches' Poll, are also on top of the preseason AP poll.

The difference between the two teams is the one first-place vote for the Badgers.

As expected, the Alabama Crimson Tide have opened up at No. 1 in the initial 2018 Top 25 college football poll, followed by No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Georgia. It was the tenth consecutive year in which the Seminoles have opened the season ranked in the AP poll.

- Mississippi State enters the season at No. 18, its highest preseason ranking since entering the 1981 season at No. 14.

Oklahoma was the highest-ranked team from the Big 12 at No. 7. The Crimson Tide are coming off of a 13-1 season that ended with a national title.

A host of Big Ten teams - five in all - cracked the top 15. It marked the first time the program had been ranked in a preseason poll.
