Australia PM Malcolm Turnbull defiant over fresh leadership challenge

Morrison became prime minister after winning a three-way contest by his party after they made a decision to spill Malcolm Turnbull from the top job.

It was the seventh prime minister in 11 years in a remarkable revolving door at Canberra's parliament house.

"I think some people should have considered the greater good of the people of Australia, and the government, rather than their own self-interest and ambition", he said.

US President Donald Trump (pictured) has phoned to congratulate new Australian prime minister Scott Morrison.

Born in a suburb of Sydney in 1968, Morrison had a background in tourism before entering parliament in 2007.

Trump's congratulatory message came after Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was ousted earlier Friday by rivals within his center-right Liberal Party.

Most of the WA branch's Federal representatives voted to elevate former Queensland cop Peter Dutton to the party's leadership, while the rest are believed to have thrown their support behind Scott Morrison.

Morrison, who fended off a challenge from Peter Dutton for the Liberal Party leadership on Friday, spoke to the US President on Saturday morning in a sign the new prime minister is keen to assure allies a week of turmoil in Australian politics poses no threat to global relationships.

"As you're all aware, there was a ballot conducted in the party room for the leadership of the Liberal Party", Government Whip Nola Marino said at a press conference a short time ago.

But the damage was already done: Twitter users thought it was hilarious that Nicki threw shade at a 6-month-old baby. Nicki Minaj hasn't held back from speaking her mind, especially in the weeks since dropping her Queen album.

After months of negotiations, a rift within the party escalated last weekend over an energy proposal from the Prime Minister, which was meant to reduce electricity prices and address climate change by cutting emissions.

One of the most dramatic weeks in Australia's political history began with Turnbull's admission that he could not pass his signature energy reform - the National Energy Guarantee (Neg).

But environmental groups are livid, with Greenpeace saying Australia deserves better than "the man who brought a lump of coal into parliament" to berate renewables supporters.

Speaking to reporters after the vote, ex-home affairs chief Dutton pledged his support for Morrison ahead of the 2019 elections.

Morrison once said it would be a waste of money to send grieving asylum seekers to their relatives' funerals.

"Our job.as we take forward this mantle of leadership as a new generation, is to ensure that we not only bring our party back together, which has been bruised and battered this week, but that. we bring the parliament back together", Morrison said in his first appearance after his party-room victory. It could also encourage Mr Morrison to call general elections.

According to Glenn Kefford, a political scientist at Macquarie University in Sydney, Morrison's leadership is likely to take the Australian government on a more conservative course.

He was officially sworn in as Australia's 30th prime minister late yesterday in a ceremony in Canberra. Australians really don't care about your squabbles, we want you to do your damn job.
