Ayanna Pressley Defeats Longtime Representative Mike Capuano in MA Democratic Primary Upset

Michael Capuano, who has represented the district for 20 years, conceded defeat in a primary that few predicted he would lose, armed with an impressive party machinery and top flight support. She was the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council in 2009.

Sitting in the back of the IBEW in Dorchester, Pressley jumped up from her seat after a moment of shock, half-asking, half-stating, "We won?" She ousted 10-term New York Rep. Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary in June.

"The nature of the 44-year-old city councilor's [Pressley's] campaign - a woman of color taking on a white, male longtime congressman in a Democratic primary - drew immediate comparisons [to Ocasio-Cortez's campaign] Wednesday", he added.

"Our president is a racist, misogynistic, truly empathy-bankrupt man", Pressley told supporters on Tuesday night. Her opponent seemed to have the money and the loyalty of a popular incumbent.

During the campaign, Capuano touted his credentials as an "unabashed liberal", but he found himself competing with Pressley over who was the more progressive candidate. "But Pressley is a proven advocate with an understanding of the needs of the district, and she would be a fresh voice in Congress. Pressley represents the present of the 7th District and the future of the Democratic Party".

Pressley has always been identified as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Pressley is backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the leftist socialist who defeated Crowley in NY on a message of pushing to "Abolish ICE". Pressley is making history; she will become the first African-American Massachusetts voters have sent to the US House of Representatives.

The 7th Congressional District is the only one in the state where minorities comprise a majority of the population.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, cheered the outcome on Twitter on Tuesday night.

No Republican is on the ballot for the seventh congressional district race in November, so the Pressley will most likely be heading to Washington in 2019. Baker will face Democrat Jay Gonzalez in November.

However, unlike Crowley, Capuano had fiercely contested the MA race by racking up endorsements, attending debates and highlighting his consistently liberal voting record in one of the most Democratic districts in a traditionally Democratic state.
