Emergency on US Gulf Coast as Storm Gordon strikes

Outermost rain bands from Tropical Storm Gordon have reaching the Panhandle of Florida Tuesday morning as it churns northwestward toward the Central Gulf coast.

"So it is quite possible that if that non-tropical storm weakens and wind shear diminishes, Gordon could ramp up to a hurricane Tuesday afternoon and early evening, just prior to landfall", Sosnowski added.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect through the weekend for Florence. Rodriguez said he is not concerned about the storm damaging his home.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, and Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey all declared states of emergencies ahead of the storm's landfall.

As much as eight inches of rain could fall in some parts of the gulf states through late Thursday. Scattered showers and storms will remain in the forecast Wednesday as Gordon pulls away, leaving our area on the southeast side of the storm and returning an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico.

Chevron and Shell said, as quoted by Reuters, that they are watching the progress of the storm and are preparing their refineries in the area for the landfall.

Forecasters said it was possible Gordon's winds might meet the 74 miles per hour threshold to be a hurricane before making landfall later Tuesday. The region could see rising waters of 3 to 5 feet. It is moving northwest at 15 miles per hour.

Hurricane warning issued as Tropical Storm Gordon hits Gulf
With strong winds pushing against the coast, there is the concern of a 3-5 foot storm surge in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. In New Orleans, a voluntary evacuation order is in effect for people who live in neighborhoods that are not protected by levees.

Meanwhile, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell warned: "The city's absolute number one priority is to ensure the safety of our residents".

He and his cousin, Lance, were relieved that the center of the storm was jogging more to the east. Lance Murphy, who referred to Gordon as a "party storm", said, "We just live through it and hope we can open again tomorrow".

Tropical Storm Gordon is the primary concern.

The US Coast Guard also said the ports of New Orleans as well as Gulfport and Pascagoula, Mississippi, may have to close within 48 hours.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Florence has become our third named hurricane of the 2018 season as it moves across the Central Atlantic.

Gordon was expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 20 centimetres over the western Florida Panhandle, southwest Alabama, southern and central MS, northeastern Louisiana and southern Arkansas, the agency said. Tornadoes are possible in the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday night.
