Labourers working on the metro project claimed that two of their co-workers, who were probably inside a temporary shelter underneath the bridge, were missing.

Another person on the spot alleged that the rescue operations had begun late.

The deceased has been identified as Soumen Bag (28), a resident of Behala in south Kolkata, who sustained head injuries. "That is why concerns are there", an Eastern Railway spokesperson said over the phone.

News reports said more than 20 people were taken to hospital, and at least one person died, according to an official at Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital.
