Musk, meanwhile, turned heads with a more than two hour podcast interview with comedian Joe Rogan in which he drank whiskey and appeared to try a marijuana-and-tobacco cigarette proffered by the comedian as he mused about artificial intelligence and colonising space.

Shares of the electric carmaker tumbled as much as 10 percent on Friday, with investors on edge after a tumultuous August during which Musk proposed and then abruptly pulled the plug on a go-private deal.

On Friday the company announced that chief accounting officer Dave Morton had resigned after a month, citing public attention and the fast pace of the post.

Elon Musk said it is "probably not wise" to kick robots in a wide-ranging interview with Joe Rogan.

"I'm getting text messages from friends saying, 'What are you doing smoking weed?' " he said. "Actually, they're pretty good at science in China, I have to say", Musk said, adding, "The mayor of Beijing has, I believe, an environmental engineering degree, and the deputy mayor has a physics degree".

He went on to say that running Tesla was the "hardest" job he has: "It's very difficult to keep a vehicle company alive".

A Tesla spokesperson wasn't immediately available to comment.

In the national capital, prices of petrol and diesel surged 16 paise/litre and 19 paise/litre, respectively. Chidambaram said the Centre and states must act together to bring petrol and diesel under GST immediately.

Tesla is under extreme pressure to turn a sustained net profit starting this quarter, as promised by Musk. But Musk also said this isn't really a priority, and he also dismissed the concept of a flying auto as impractical.

Mr Rogan offered his guest the drug, which is legal in California, as the pair discussed tech innovation and the public's perception of Mr Musk. In an interview with Bloomberg Television, he called for the company to split up the chairman and CEO jobs - Musk has served both roles since October 2008.

Many of Musk's Twitter followers questioned if smoking marijuana was against the company's policy, while others mocked the CEO's initial $420 bid, a number that has become code for marijuana.

In August he told the New York Times that he worked "120-hour weeks" and took sedatives.

Shareholders have sued Tesla, claiming that Musk's tweet constituted illegal market manipulation.

"I don't think you'd necessarily want to be me", he said.

Tesla said cash from Model 3 sales will pay the bills and drive profits.
