Novak Djokovic wins men's US Open singles title

One day after the women's singles final was marred by a confrontation between Serena Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos, Djokovic defeated Juan Martin del Potro, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 with a minimum of fuss to secure his third title in Flushing Meadows and his 14th Grand Slam singles crown. However, backed by his singing fans, Del Potro roared back in the set by breaking Djokovic to go back on serve.

The effort took its toll on a suddenly weary-looking Del Potro as a 95-minute set was claimed by Djokovic in the tiebreak.

This was Djokovic's third championship in NY, along with those in 2011 and 2015.

"I was hoping he's [Pete Sampras] going to be here tonight but I want to say 'Pete, I love you, you're my idol".

"He's probably one of the most in-form players".

Federer lost in the fourth round in NY, while Nadal retired from his semifinal against del Potro because of a bad right knee. Federer, another favorite here and the No. 2 seed, was ousted in the fourth round.

A year after missing the U.S. Open because of an injured right elbow that would require surgery, Djokovic showed that he is unquestionably back at his best and back at the top of tennis.

The Serb, who was back in the final for an eighth time and contesting his 23rd Grand Slam final - the third most in men's tennis history - was serving exceptionally well and earned a break in the eighth game after showing tremendous patience before successfully serving out the set. Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray have now won 50 of the past 55 Grand Slams. "Ole Ole Ole. Delpo, Delpo" reverberated around the stadium in support of Del Potro. "I've spent all my career learning with Novak, Roger, Rafa, seeing them winning these events very often". Of course, I'm sad to lose but I'm happy for Novak as well.

"We just do what we can against them".

The sixth seed had suffered in the ferocious heat and humidity through the early days of the season's final Grand Slam but dropped only two sets for the tournament and none since the second round.

Yet Djokovic was ultimately too strong, his ability to counter his opponent's two biggest weapons - Del Potro's serve and forehand - proving key as he triumphed 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in three hours and 16 minutes.

Thankfully, Del Potro's injury woes look to be behind him. It was even louder because of the closed roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium to keep out the rain.

However, Del Potro and his mighty forehand came to the party, striking back in spectacular fashion to level at 3-3, while the support for the giant Argentine appeared to rattle Djokovic's concentration levels.

Eventually, the Serb held.

There are other important statistics to consider, however, which clearly suggest that brain will play as significant a part as brawn in the final.

Del Potro's movement went from nimble to clunky after that. "But Novak has everything to make records in this sport".

On court, the match was defined by its many long rallies and impossibly powerful groundstrokes. He depended on his hometown friends, a group of whom have been in NY throughout the fortnight to lead cheers in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and worked his way back to the final at his favorite ATP Tour event.

A focused Djokovic continued to apply pressure in the third set until Del Potro finally cracked on serve to fall behind 5-3, with the Serb closing out the match with a ferocious overhead victor. His eyes were still red when he spoke to reporters later. "They deserve to win". They went back and forth, through eight deuces and all those break opportunities for del Potro, until he slapped one forehand into the net, and another sailed wide.
