Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz passes away in London

The former first lady had been undergoing cancer treatment at a Harley Street clinic in London since August a year ago after she was diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma. She further underwent multiple surgeries and around five chemotherapy sessions. She has been on life-support in the hospital since July this year.

Shehbaz Sharif will leave for London today to get the dead body.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was born in 1950.

Jailed ex-premier Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz are now in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, serving their sentences in the Avenfield corruption case; and were handed jail sentences of 10 years and seven years respectively.

Referring to her mother, Maryam Nawaz had said that she had dauntlessly challenged a usurper when "most men did not". "Our legal team will handle the matter", he said.

New Prime Minister Imran Khan issued a statement offering condolences and ordering the Pakistani High Commission in London to "provide the family all the necessary facilities and cooperation".

"The (Sharif) family is in jail and if they apply to participate in the rituals as per law, we have no objection".

The Indian premier conveyed his deepest condolences to the Sharif family.

Reuters quoted Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry as saying: "We have just received a request from the family, and, Inshallah, we will be granting parole".

This was reportedly the last time Nawaz Sharif had spoken to his wife. She was diagnosed with lymphoma a year ago, barely a month after Nawaz Sharif was removed from office by the Supreme Court.

Offering his condolences to the bereaved family, the PPP leader termed the demise a great loss.

"May Allah bless the departed soul eternal peace at Heaven", he remarked.

She had the honour of serving as the first lady thrice in her lifetime.

The family had reported a slight improvement in her condition on July 11, a day before Nawaz Sharif and their daughter Maryam left for Pakistan after being sentenced to 10 years in jail in a corruption case.

During her husband's exile after the 1999 military coup by Pervez Musharraf, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz took over reins of the party and served as its president from 1999 to 2002.
