US Military Gearing Up For Hurricane Florence

McMaster's announcement on Tuesday followed a Monday press conference in which he ordered all coastal counties in the state - including Beaufort, Jasper and Colleton counties - to evacuate. UNC-Wilmington canceled all classes and ordered a voluntary evacuation at noon on Monday.Eastern Carolina University canceled classes starting at noon on Tuesday for the remainder of the week.

"Pretend, assume, presume that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack dab in the middle of South Carolina and is going to go way inshore", South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said.

Hurricanes Florence, Helene, and Isaac are all now brewing in the Atlantic Ocean.

SC released a full statement Monday night with Hurricane Florence approaching the Carolinas and Virginia.

The 1st effects were already being seen on barrier islands Monday as risky rip currents and seawater flowed over the state highway.

Authorities are warning about Florence's potential to unleash prolonged torrential rains and life-threatening floods, down trees, knock out electricity and submerge entire communities - especially if it slows to a crawl and lingers inland for several days, just as Hurricane Harvey stalled over Texas in 2017.

"Florence is a threat well beyond the coast, so inland counties need to be ready as well", he added.

"Hurricane 1 category Isaac is on the way to the Small Antilles, weakened, and on September 13 will move into the Eastern Caribbean sea".

Airlines, including American and Southwest, have started letting passengers change travel plans that take them into the hurricane's possible path. The space agency described the footage as "a stark and sobering" view of the storm, as it moved with wind speeds of 130 miles per hour.

As of noon Hurricane Florence was deemed a category 4 hurricane which is one of the strongest hurricanes of this season. The National Hurricane Center predicts a hurricane watch will likely be issued by Tuesday morning for the "extremely risky major hurricane".

The hurricane is generating swells that are already affecting Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast.

Florence is now one of three hurricanes spinning in the Atlantic Ocean, along with Helene and Isaac.

Florence is still a Category 4 hurricane and is expected to regain its top wind strength in the next day or so.

Preparations for Florence were intensifying up and down the densely populated east coast.

"This is one of the worst storms to hit the East Coast in many years", President Donald Trump warned on Twitter.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said an estimated 1 million people would be fleeing his state's coast, with eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 heading into Charleston and USA 501 heading into Myrtle Beach reversed to ease the exodus.

The Navy said all ships in Virginia's coastal Hampton Roads area were preparing to leave port for open seas.

While in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, many are getting ready for life off the grid, buying up generators, flashlights, water and lots of plywood to cover up windows.
