Haley apparently told Trump six months ago she was planning to leave the post at the United Nations, and her move was a closely guarded secret inside the administration.

Rumors swirled that the first daughter was under consideration nearly immediately as news broke of Haley's resignation earlier in the day.

"We're all happy for you, in one way", Trump said. "And I think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up".

With US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley set to depart by year's end, speculation is rampant as who might replace her.

He says Guterres and Haley had "a very productive and strong working relationship" and "worked hard to promote constructive ties between the United Nations and the United States".

The outgoing ambassador returned the praise. "If we are speaking honestly about conflict in the Middle East, we need to start with the chief culprit: Iran and its partner militia, Hezbollah", she said last spring.

Returning the favor, Haley praised Trump and his family for their support. On Tuesday, she said one of her accomplishments was that the United Nations imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan in a US -sponsored resolution. "No, I am not running for 2020", she said.

I did not plan this, I tried to get here. "15 minutes I'm here, this guy didn't come, this is disrespect. have a good night", he said.

She has been floated as a potential primary challenger to Trump in 2020, but she said Tuesday that she will not run and will be campaigning for Trump.

Nearly two years into the job, Ms Haley said it was just time to let someone else step in.

Diplomacy and national security reporter for The Washington Post, John Hudson, detailed some tangible reasons why Haley may have left her post at the UN. Mr Bolton has been exerting more influence on foreign policymaking in the administration than his predecessor HR McMaster.

The administration has a list of names and Mr Trump expected a decision in "two or three weeks" in naming a successor.

The President said he is considering "numerous people" including his former deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, whom he said "is under consideration".

"Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30am", he tweeted. "They should be heard, and they should be dealt with".

Trump accepted the resignation, Axios news site reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter. One of her most memorable speeches is when she told the other member nations that the USA was "taking names" on those who refused to stand with them.
