US Mega Millions jackpot hits $1.6bn

The odds of matching all six numbers and winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million.

The Mega Millions game, which was created in 2002, has seen changes over the years that have reduced the chances of winning, meaning bigger and bigger jackpots.

The winning numbers on Saturday were 16, 54, 57, 62, 69, and the Powerball was 23.

On Tuesday, that would mean a total of almost $905 million - before taxes, according to the Mega Millions website.

The nation's largest lottery jackpots have now rolled for a few months.

There were a few runner-up prizes handed out, including some $1 million winners in New Jersey and CT. Mega Millions now marks the largest lottery prize in the history of the United States.

Israeli officials ramp up calls for a 'strong blow' against Gaza
Earlier, Conricus told CBN News that Hamas is trying to involve the worldwide community by getting Israel to kill Palestinians. The head of Egypt's General Intelligence Service, Abbas Kamel, will arrive in Gaza on Thursday, sources in Gaza tell CNN.

The current jackpot been growing since July, when some California office workers won $543 million.

But, although there were 15 second-tier winning tickets of at least $1 million across nine states, nobody won the jackpot - putting the prize for Tuesday's draw at a record $1.6 billion.

That is partly by design.

For an extra $1 you can get a "Power Play" ticket in which you can increase the amount of the smaller prizes, but not the grand prize.

Leaders of the USA lottery industry, which generates about $80 billion in annual revenue, have experimented with different rules and marketing strategies as they have encountered falling interest among millennials, who are used to the almost-instant gratification of online games and social media.

If more than one victor is picked, the jackpot would be divided proportionately, as happened when the previous Mega Millions record of $656 million was drawn in March 2012 and was shared by winners in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland, a lottery official said.
