Mega Millions numbers drawn for record $1.6 billion jackpot

That's because one single winning ticket for the record $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot was purchased somewhere in the Palmetto State, beating the seemingly insurmountable 1-in-302.5 million odds.

The winning numbers? 28-70-5-62-65, with a Mega Ball of 5.

The Mega Millions jackpot grew so large because it had been almost three months since a player had matched all six numbers and won the top prize.

The previous record for the largest U.S. lottery prize was a $1.586bn (£1.226bn) jackpot for a Powerball draw in 2016.

"The final total was less than the $1.6 billion estimate", said Carol Gentry, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Lottery, which leads a consortium of state lotteries participating in the Mega Millions jackpot.

The jackpot ballooned because no one had won since July, when a group of office workers in California shared a $543 million prize. Several thousand other tickets sold were winners ranging from $2 to $600.

The victor has the option of taking the cash lump sum of $913 million before taxes, or an annuity of $1.6 billion in 30 payments.

Two million dollars tickets were also sold in MI at Ric's Food Center, 705 S Mission St, Mount Pleasant and at Bricks, 862 44th Street SW in Grandville.

Early Wednesday, the Mega Millions website reported there was just that one winning ticket. A ticket costs $2 - but the odds of winning are about 1 in 302 million.

"Document precisely who is part of the lottery pool so that there's no misunderstanding later", he said. Virginia Lottery officials said as many as 12,700 tickets were being sold per minute at the sales peak in that state.

The lump sum cash payout is estimated at $354.3m.

The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday, and the jackpot will reset itself to $40 million - or $22.8 million cash.

The buyer of the ticket beat odds of 1 in 303 million to win the Mega Millions drawing.

According to lottery officials, 75 percent of them were expected to be sold by Tuesday night's drawing. Wednesday's will be the third-largest Powerball jackpot.
