BJP, Congress Claim Victory Following SC's Order on CBI Director Verma

Verma had challenged his removal since Centre can not arbitrarily do so because of the framework of 2-year fixed term of CBI director without any interference from the Centre. He told the Supreme Court that "the details of many cases which have led to the present circumstances are extremely sensitive" and demanded that the agency be insulated from government's interference.

Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said the Supreme Court order had, in fact, clipped the government's wings by making the CVC inquiry time-bound and placing Patnaik above the CVC to monitor the investigations.

Nariman referred to the CVC and central government's orders divesting Verma of his duty. "Changing the CBI director will not work", he said.

The court also made it clear that from now on M Nageswara Rao, who is a joint director of CBI, would only perform the routine tasks that are essential to keep the CBI functional.

The BJP, therefore, thought that the three-judge SC bench vindicated the Union government's stance, which thought the SC effectively allowed the CVC to finish its probe.

But his petition was not heard on Friday and will be entertained in due course.

Rahul Gandhi, the scion of India´s Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and president of the Congress party, was briefly taken to a Delhi police station after leading a march by hundreds of supporters to the CBI headquarters.

The Centre has described the Supreme Court order seeking the completion of a Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) inquiry into allegations against CBI Director Alok Verma under court supervision as an "extremely positive development".

"Rahul Gandhi's arrest by an autocratic Modi government won't deter or cow down millions of Congress workers from exposing the dismantling of the CBI to hide the Rafale scam", he said.

Former Supreme Court Judge A K Patnaik, who denounced CBI as a "caged parrot", will oversee the CVC enquiry against CBI Director Alok Verma.

Rao also has the charge of additional director, along with A K Sharma and Praveen Sinha, both from the Gujarat cadre.

Asthana was also divested of all supervisory charges on Tuesday. Asthana, it was said, has close links with the top officials of the prime minister's office and was handling important cases against the opposition leaders. The government has sent Mr Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana on forced leave after both accused each other of taking bribe from the same businessman. Verma states in the petition that Rakesh Asthana had "stymied" several decisions which were crucial to the investigation of these cases.
