Facebook Inc. said the top spender on political ads on its sites since May was U.S. Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke, who is challenging Republican Ted Cruz in Texas.

Donald J. Trump, who repeatedly has accused the social media giant of liberal bias, spent almost $5 million on more than 100,000 ads purchased through his Make America Great Again Committee and his Trump for President organization. Trump is campaigning to stave off a Democratic push to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives and possibly the Senate, when they could derail or stall much of his agenda and increase congressional oversight and investigation of his administration.
