Hamilton beats Vettel to F1 title again

Ricciardo snatched the pole position from Verstappen at the end of a sizzling round of qualifying at the Mexican Grand Prix on Saturday, setting up a Red Bull fight from the front row as both drivers duel for the team's third win of the season.

Hamilton ultimately won the title at Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix having finished finished third in Texas.

Hamilton, who matches the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio on the all-time list, was making a successful defense of the title which he also sealed in Mexico a year ago.

The 33-year-old has an unassailable lead of 64 points into the concluding Brazil and Abu Dhabi races over Vettel, who has failed to add to his four world titles at Red Bull since joining Ferrari in 2015. Hamilton was third in Texas and struggled with his vehicle all weekend in Mexico City.

The 33-year Briton made a superb start to the race, moving from third on the grid in his Mercedes to overtake pole sitter Daniel Ricciardo and almost forcing his way into the lead.

Hamilton's fifth championship arguably ranks among his best. Hamilton finished fourth, sparking a championship celebration in the high altitude of Mexico City for the second consecutive year.

For the second year in succession, Vettel has watched Hamilton sew up the title with two rounds to spare. And even with Ferrari's mechanical gains, Mercedes shows no signs of slowing down. He even had a drive off into the grass when he missed the corner out of the long straight at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Vettel came into the current campaign with plenty of optimism that he would beat rival Hamilton to the honour of going level with Juan Manuel Fangio on five titles. Only Germany's Michael Schumacher has more championships with seven.

Ricciardo, who is leaving Red Bull at the end of the season for Renault and will be replaced by Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly, has won twice this year but also had eight retirements in 19 races.

Ricciardo's race ended late with engine failure.

The Australian was running in second and set for a one-stop strategy which would have likely seen him hold off Sebastian Vettel for a Red Bull one-two before smoke began billowing from his auto with only 10 laps remaining. Vettel won all his championships with Red Bull from 2010-2013. The straight line power of his Mercedes nosed his vehicle in front until Verstappen cut under him at the first corner.

Hamilton started a trend, with Ricciardo and Verstappen following suit on laps 12 and 13.
