Amazon may decide to create two HQ2 locations, instead of just one

Amazon is planning to split its coveted second headquarters between two U.S. cities rather than pack it into a single urban setting, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The Journal reported Amazon could announce its choice ー or choices ー as early as this week.

Numerous cities have been bidding for the online sales giant's second location - including Crystal City in Virginia.Amazon announced back in January it had narrowed its search for the location of its second headquarters to 20 cities. The company fueled excitement in its plans by inviting cities to pitch themselves as sites for the development.

It's no secret that Washington one of Jeff Bezos's favorite cities. But that also was the case for just about every other city that participated in this sham. Seattle-based Amazon is expected to unveil its HQ2 as soon as this week.

Amazon has not confirmed either report.

Reports that Amazon may split its new headquarters between two locations is raising questions about the financial incentives offered by those cities bidding to become the new hub.

Amazon initially chose 20 possible cities for next headquarters and said it plans to make $5 billion in capital investments alone in the city it chooses.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been pushing for Amazon to move its second headquarters to the state, telling reporters on Monday he would change his name to "Amazon Cuomo" to secure the deal.

A company spokesman, Adam Sedo, reached by phone in Seattle, told The Associated Press that Amazon would not comment on "rumors and speculation". This includes details on real estate and which building might be available to Amazon, as well as how an announcement might be made later this month.

"Usually, across the board, when you're dealing with a company and you've made proposals, they will let you know one way or another", Cooper said, speaking after a routine N.C. Council of State meeting.

Today's report comes after a whirlwind of rumored activity on Amazon's HQ2 decision process this weekend. Amazon is already familiar with Northern Virginia as it has data centers nearby in Ashburn, Sterling, Chantilly, Manassas and Haymarket.

"It gives us a new source of growth", said Mitchell Moss, the Henry Hart Rice professor of urban policy and planning at NYU.

The company's current market value is about $800 billion and analysts estimate Amazon will generate more than $230 billion in sales this year, according to FactSet.
