When the new Congress convenes in January 2019, for the first time it will have at least one Muslim woman among its ranks.

Omar, 37, made history in 2017 as the first female Muslim and first Somali-American legislator in the USA when she was sworn in as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

She is expected to share the honour with Somali-American Ilhan Omar, who was leading the opinion polls in Minnesota. She has a bachelor's degree in politics from North Dakota State University and has also studied public affairs.

Tlaib celebrated her congressional victory not with an American flag, but with a Palestinian flag. Her mother died when Ilhan was a child and she was raised by her father and grandfather.

The Democrat lived in the Kenyan refugee camp till the age of 12 when she moved to the US. "I'm going from the state House to the opportunity to serve in Congress, and serve the people in the Fifth, which is a great honor and a great opportunity".

No Republicans were on the ballot in the heavily Democratic district, which represents parts of Detroit and some suburbs. Newly elected Minnesota Attorney General and former DNC Deputy Chair Keith Ellison has for years been connected to Farrakhan, but many would agree he has failed to properly distance himself from him.

It was also agreed that China will support Pakistan in establishing special economic zones, according to sources. Imran Khan said he had followed President Xi as a statesman during his political carrier spanning over 22 years.

Omar and Tlaib are among 100 or more Muslims who ran for office in 2018, an unprecedented surge in political engagement, reported BuzzFeed. "Yes, we marched outside the Capitol, but now we get to march into the Capitol", she wrote on Twitter this morning.

Rashida, who is associated with a socialist group within the Democratic Party, is also very popular in this constituency.

She won a seat in the state's legislature in 2016, becoming the first Somali-American lawmaker in the country.

Democrat Ilhan Omar holds up a newspaper after she was interviewed by The Associated Press Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, in Minneapolis after winning Minnesota's 5th Congressional District race in Tuesday's election.

Her parents were Palestinian immigrants from the West Bank and Jerusalem.
