Vernita did not raise Oprah for the first part of her life, as the presenter went to live with her maternal grandmother in rural MS after Vernita moved to Milwaukee to work as a housemaid. Oprah's niece, Alisha Hayes, wrote that Lee died on Thanksgiving Day, and her family recently confirmed her death, TMZ reported. Oprah had Vernita on her talk show in 1990. "I could tell instantly when I walked in the room that she didn't like me, and it was because of the color of my skin". "I made the decision to give her up because I was unable to totally take care of her".

Lee is survived by Winfrey and Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, her daughter who she placed for adoption and later reconnected with.

In an interview in 2007 with US TV station WTMJ Vernita said Winfrey always had something special.
