Google may pull the plug on Hangouts in 2020

As mentioned, Google already offers replacement apps for this. Realtime Comms product lead for Google's G Suite - including Hangouts Meet and Chat, and Google Voice - Scott Johnston pushed back at the report, arguing that "No decisions made about when Hangouts will be shut down". However, given the neglect that Hangouts itself has experienced for a couple of years, one wonders how committed Google actually are to maintaining that core experience for rusted-on users. After years of indications that such a move could be imminent, Google may finally be shutting down its Hangouts platform for consumers.

The news doesn't come as a surprise as Google had long ago stopped updating Google Hangouts.

"As mentioned, Hangouts as a brand will live on with G Suite's Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, the former meant to be a team communication app comparable to Slack, and the latter a video meetings platform", the report added.

Google Hangouts is a communication platform developed by the company which includes messaging, video chat, SMS and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) features.

Google is now working on a new messaging app that will support Rich Communications Services (RCS), making SMS nearly WhatsApp like. Google unveiled a new strategy for Hangouts in 2017 when it launched the two messaging applications Allo and Duo. Furthermore, we're told current Hangouts users will be upgraded to Hangouts Chat and Meet.

This RCS-based messaging app from Google is likely to launch in 2019 or early 2020, after which the company will put Hangouts to sleep.
