The seven-time Mr Olympia and action star hero built up a long and lasting friendship with the U.S. president and the 71-year-old Austrian-born superstar pointed out that Bush helped revolutionise the fitness boom in the 1990s.

"The 41st President will be carried to his final rest wearing socks that pay tribute to his lifetime of service, starting as an 18 year-old naval aviator in war. No struggling, no pain at all".

George HW Bush, who was U.S. president between 1989 and 1993, died on Friday at the age of 94.

Americans will begin saying goodbye to Mr Bush on Monday when his body arrives in Washington for public viewing in the Capitol Rotunda.

After services in Washington, there will be another funeral in Houston on Thursday followed by burial at the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

The Bush family's spokesman, Jim McGrath, shared the moving picture with the caption: "Mission complete".

He also ordered flags to half-staff for 30 days at the White House and other official sites, including public buildings and military posts, in Bush's honor and "and as an expression of public sorrow".

"But he was alert", Baker said during a blitz of appearances on five Sunday talk shows.

After it became clear that death was imminent, they got all the Bush kids on the phone, with son Neil Bush the only one in the room.

Colorful socks were one of the former president's favorite fashion accessories.

The president's body will be interred at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
