Mattis also asserted that Russian Federation had interfered in the November midterm elections for Congress, though he gave no details nor provided any further evidence.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Saturday that Russian Federation attempted to interfere in the United States midterm elections last month.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said that Russian President Vladimir Putin "tried to muck around" in November's midterm elections, amid increasingly tense relations between the US and Russia.

Mattis said the Trump administration and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have pressed Russian Federation repeatedly on un-democratic actions, but to no avail.

The remarks by Mattis at a security forum in California came a day after President Donald Trump held informal talks with Putin on the sidelines of the Group of 20 industrialized nations meeting in Argentina.

China's imports of USA commodities had shown strong growth prior to the imposition of tariffs in the middle of this year.

On Saturday, Putin said he hopes a meeting with Trump will take place "when the U.S. is ready".

Mattis said the relationship between the United States and Russian Federation has "no doubt" worsened amid Russia's continued efforts to intervene in the USA electoral process.

The U.S. intelligence community is reviewing data from the midterm elections for any evidence of foreign interference - with a report on the probe due to the administration later this month.

"We'll do whatever necessary to defend", Mattis said. "He is not recognizing that what he is doing is actually creating the animosity against his people, he's not acting in the best interest of the Russian people", the secretary said during Q&A following his keynote speech. Trump abruptly canceled a planned meeting with Putin at the summit just two days before they were scheduled to sit down. Trump tweeted while on his way to Buenos Aires.

"Mr. Putin clearly comes tight".
