If the Hammers were bruised from their 4-0 home defeat by Manchester City a week earlier, they did not show it on Tyneside.

After an abysmal start to the season, Newcastle had pulled clear of the Premier League relegation zone with three successive victories against Watford, Bournemouth and Burnley, sneaking above West Ham on goal difference in the process.

Javier Hernandez brought Newcastle's recovery in the English Premier League to a juddering halt by scoring twice in West Ham's 3-0 win at St James' Park on Saturday.

"I don't think we played particularly badly, but we gave them too many opportunities to score and they punished us".

"Andy is maybe one step (further) forward than Wilshere because he played 45 minutes in the friendly game that we had against Brentford", added Pellegrini.

After the game, Benitez acknowledged the threat that Hernandez, Anderson, Marko Arnautovic and Robert Snodgrass posed on the break.

"It was certainly not our best performance, and unfortunately we lost".

Marko Arnautovic's intelligent movement repeatedly caused problems as Newcastle's defending remained unconvincing, although West Ham were unable to muster another effort on goal in the first half.

Jack Wilshere could also join Carroll in ending his lengthy spell on the sidelines after being out for 10 weeks following ankle surgery.

They got their noses in front courtesy of Javier Hernandez's 12th-minute strike and then picked off the Magpies at will with a display of lethal counter-attacking football.

The Hammers boss said: 'There were very few words that I spoke with him at the beginning of the season.

"You can see Newcastle are more of a force and they are more dynamic".

Asked the reason for the transformation of results, Pellegrini said: "Manchester City is a top team that doesn't allow you to make mistakes".

The task for West Ham the defender feels will be to play with full concentration for the full 90 minutes and not drop important points that they have been dropping this season.

"Yes, yes. I am very, very pleased because we played a complete game", the Chilean enthused.
