Director and actress Penny Marshall dies at 75

A League of Their Own was eventually chosen for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Her father was director, producer and screenwriter, Garry Marshall, one of the masterminds behind 'Happy Days'.

Those who knew Marshall best - including Marshall's ex-husband filmmaker Rob Reiner, actor Tom Hanks and more - took to Twitter to honor the filmmaker and actor.

The Marshall family said in a statement: "Our family is heartbroken". Her mother, Marjorie Marshall, was a dance teacher, and her father, Anthony, made industrial films.

The aspiring actress was hardly blessed with typical Hollywood looks - she once appeared as the "before" photo in an ad for a beauty product, with Farrah Fawcett as the "after" girl - and Marshall never lost the thick accent of her home borough.

Laverne & Shirley also starred Cindy Williams as Shirley, indelicate tomboy Laverne's more well-mannered apartment roommate and brewery co-worker. Her television credits also include Mary Tyler Moore, Murder Police, and Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers, including guest appearances on The Bob Newhart Show, Mork & Mindy, The Simpsons, Fraiser, Bones, and Entourage. Marshall brought to life the power of women and what we could do together.

The first film she directed was Jumpin' Jack Flash in 1986, which featured a cover of the hit Rolling Stones song of the same name performed by the late Aretha Franklin.

Marshall's final film as a director was an as yet unreleased documentary about NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, and her resume over the last 35 years or so is dotted with acting roles of various sizes.

"Star Trek" actor George Takei said she "truly broke new ground as a director". She also dated singer Art Garfunkel for five years.
